Abstract

1468793 Alcoholysis of ethylene/vinyl ester copolymers; product recovery NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP 18 Feb 1974 43803/73 Heading C3P In the alcoholysis of ethylene/vinyl ester copolymers, especially ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, effected in the presence of (1) a C 1-4 monohydric alcohol, e.g. methanol or ethanol, (2) a hydrocarbon solvent,e.g. benzene or xylene, and (3) an acidic or alkaline catalyst, e.g. sodium methoxide, ethoxide or hydroxide, reproducability of the degree of alcoholysis in at least two successive runs is attained by regulating the total initial water content of the reaction medium to be substantially constant from run to run and within the range 1-10,000 p.p.m. Such regulation may be effected by drying one or both of the reaction media, and by conducting the reaction under an inert atmosphere. Several alternative methods of product recovery are given: (1) removing the alcohol, ester by-product and catalyst by extraction with water, and either evaporating or steamdistilling; (2) adding additional alcohol to the reaction mixture, at reflux temperature, allowing the mixture to stand for a period, and then agitating to produce a rubbery crumb; or (3) adding further alcohol at reflux temperature to precipitate the product. Which method is used depends on the residual vinyl ester content of the product.
