Abstract

A method of manufacturing polyvinyl acetate of degree of polymerization of less than 1000 comprises polymerizing vinyl acetate continuously in an alcoholic solution of polyvinyl acetate of at least 45% concentration based on the weight of solution, reactants being added at the same rate as that at which the polymerization reaction mixture is removed so as to leave the overall concentration of the reactants and products constant. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. 2, 21-azo-bisisobutyronitrile. Specified alcohols are methanol and ethanol, which may contain a small amount of water. Partial or complete hydrolysis of the products may be effected in the presence of alkaline or acid catalysts, preferably immediately after polymerization to avoid discolouration of the product. The polymerization may be commenced by adding vinyl acetate gradually to the solvent until a solution suitable for carrying out the process of the invention has been obtained.
