Abstract

The marc is treated in a diffusion tank, the piquette passing into an alcohol stripping column. The alcohol is taken off at the top and the residual liq. is joined by the marc for treatment with hydrochloric acid. The larger portion is flocculated at a high pH and then goes to a precoat rotary filter; the residue is used for manure while the liq. is neutralised and re-cycled. A substantial redn. is effected in the vol. and the chemical oxygen demand of the reject to the natural environment. Most of the tartaric acid is recovered as calcium tartrate; N2 and P are also recovered.
