Abstract

Charge is completely separate from the projectile it is intended to propel and is provided with two percussion caps, one in front and one at the rear of the charge. The latter is made from agglomerated, conventional powders and is coated with a plastic sheath; this may contain anti-erosion, flash-reducing and cooling additives. A polyester sheath contg. an oxalate is partic. suitable because the decompsn. of the oxalate causes a strong cooling effect, by the absorption of heat. The charge is fired by a pin fixed to the rear of the projection; this pin strikes the forward percussion cap when the shell is made to recoil by a spigot push system. The absence of a cartridge case eliminates the problems of ejection, the rear sealing of the barrel and the storage of the empty cartridge cases after firing. The percussion cap fixed at the rear of the charge is for use in case of a misfire, a second firing device being used in this case.
