Abstract
A synthetic filaments (e.g. acrylic polyesters) tow is advanced over a large front roller and under a large back roller, the two being pressed against the front and back rollers over a predetermined arc of contact, by associated small diameter presser rolls. The difference in rotational speed of the front and back rollers, which may be cooled, causes the filaments to stretch break to form fibres having a staple length is not >150 mm. Since the front and back rollers contact opposite sides of the tow and are exceedingly large, a more uniform heat distribution across the tow in achieved, resulting in a better quality fibres.
