Abstract

A feedstock for the delayed coking process, consisting of (A) 50-90wt.% atmospheric distillation residues from petroleum and (B) 10-50wt.% tars from catalytic cracking of residual, low-ash distillates e.g. gas oils, is coked in a 24-48 h. cycle at 475 degrees-515 degrees C under 3-7 atmos. with a recycle ratio such that a coke yield of 15-40 (20-30)% is obtained. (A) has density 0.935-0.965 viscosity 2.8-4.5 degrees Engler at 100 degrees C, 0.85-1.10%S, Conradson C5-7%, aromatics 40-60%, asphalts 1.8%, 20% boiling at 250 degrees-350 degrees C and ash content under 0.05% (B) has density 0.90-0.95, viscosity 2.5-3.2 degrees Engler at 50 degrees C, 0.6%S, Conradson C3.5-4.5%, aromatics >35%, asphalts 0.6%, 8-12% boiling at 250 degrees-300 degrees C and 30-40% at 300 degrees-350 degrees C. The coke obtained is suitable for mfr. of ultra high power electrodes. Cost of the feed-stock is reduced by elimination of pretreatment and the higher proportions of (A) used.
