Abstract

The proportion of oils of low boiling-point in distillates obtained by the destructive distillation of coal, lignite peat, and similar carbonaceous materials is increased by subjecting the whole distillate while still in the vapour phase and as it leaves the coal &c. retorts to a silent electric discharge. Hydrogenating gases such as hydrogen, methane, coal gas, or the gas remaining after the condensible constituents have been removed from the products produced by the reaction may be mixed with the vapours. Vapours from coal retorts are passed through a chamber containing cylindrical metal electrodes connected with a source of current having a voltage of 8000 volts and a periodicity of 100. The distillates may be kept in the vapour phase by surrounding the chamber with a jacket through which hot flue gases are circulated. Voltages up to 100,000 with a periodicity up to 35000 may be used and under such conditions a product having a boiling-point about that of petrol is obtained. Specifications 104,330, 169,063, 275,120, 286,825, 288,270, and 318,270, [all in Class 32, Distilling &c.], are referred to.
