Abstract

The nitrile (I) is prepd. by reacting equimolar amounts of ethylene oxide with iminodiacetonitrile at 40-90 degrees C pH 3.0-7.0 (5-7) and press. of 1 atm-1 bar. Hydoxy-2-ethylimino diacetic acid is formed by hydrolysis of aq. soln. of (I)) with strong mineral acid at pH 1.5. The alkali metal salt is formed by reacting (I) with alkali metal hydroxide.
