Abstract

Dicarbonates of formula: R1OOC-O-COOR2 (where R1 and R2 are indep. 1-18 C alkyl, phenyl or benyl gps., alkali metal or NH4 ions), esp. diethyl dicarbonate, are used as activators for peroxy gp.-contg. cpds., used in opt. continuous bleaching and brightening of org. materials, e.g. natural and synthetic fibres and textiles, wood and oils, also human hair and feathers, foils, leather, paper, skins and cosmetics, pref. at pH 3-10 (4-8.5), and pref. in presence of alkali metal trichloroacetates, as alkali suppliers, and of salts of divalent cations, esp. Ca salts, to raise brightness.
