Abstract

Polyols of polyoxyalkylene ethers contg. water-sol. impurities from residual catalyst and of mol.wt. >=300 and 65% ethylene oxide gps. are purified from a mixt. of water, polyol and an inert solvent of greatly different density to water forming a non-water miscible polymer/solvent layer sepd. by centrifuging. Water with impurities is recovered and the solvent (chosen from aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, ethers, halogen cpds.) is distilled from the polyol and recycled. Proportions are 80:1-1:50 pts. polyol:solvent per 1 pt. water. Mixing temp. is >20 degrees C. Catalyst residue level is reduced to about 10ppm which reduces side reactions in polyurethane prodn.
