Abstract

Polyoxyalkylene ether polyols which have a mol. wt. of >=300, contain 65 wt.% epoxyethane, and contain water soluble catalyst residues, are purified by (a) prepg. a mixt. of water, the polyol, and an inert solvent which has a density much different from that of water, and is a solvent for the polyol, (b) forming a soln. of the polyol in the solvent which is immiscible with the water, (c) sepg. the polyol soln. from the water by centrifuging, (d) separately recovering a water stream contg. the catalyst residues, and the polyol soln., and (e) recovering the polyol by removing the solvent. Stages (a), (b) and (c) are effected >20 degrees C. The volume ratio of polyol and solvent to water is 80:1-1:50. Efficiently removes the catalyst residues at low cost with less loss of polyol than use of solid absorbents. The treated polyol is suitable for polyurethane prepn.
