Abstract
Polyoxyalkylene ether polyols contg. water soluble impurities derived from residual catalyst, and having a mol. wt. >=300 and a content of ethylene oxide units 65%. are purified esp. for polyurethane prepn. by (a) forming a mixt. of water, the polyol, and a solvent which has a density considerably different from that of water, dissolves the polyol and is inert relative to the polyol and water, to give a soln. of the polyol in the solvent, which is immiscible with water, (b) centrifugally sepg. the polyol soln. from the water to give streams of water contg. the impurities, and polyol soln. and (c) recovering the polyol by elimination of the solvent. Simple, efficient process giving polyols with a low impurity content e.g. =2 ppm without use of solid absorbants. Loss of polyol minimised.
