Abstract

1377486 Polyethers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 4722/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Polyethers contaminated with basic inorganic materials are purified by treatment in the presence of water with a compound containing at least one carboxylic acid group and at least two hydroxyl groups, suitably tartaric acid. Treatment temperatures preferably range from 25‹ to 150‹ C. Volatile material including water may be removed by subsequent heating under reduced pressure, and a further filtration step removes insoluble material. The acid-treated material may be optionally treated with an insoluble basic material and also with an adsorbent material to remove coloured impurities. Polyethers suitable for treatment include those having a hydroxyl equivalent weight of from 60 to 3000 obtained by the polymerization of one or more alkylene oxides in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and optional amounts of compounds containing one or more active hydrogen atoms. Examples describe the preparation and purification of ethylene oxide endcapped glycerol-propylene oxide condensation products (M.W. 3500), of a tolylene diaminepropylene oxide condensation product (M.W. 470), of a low molecular weight condensation product of propylene oxide and a mixture of triethanolamine and tolylene diamine, and of a glycerol-propylene oxide condensation product (M.W. 310).
