Abstract

1369304 Purifying polyethers SOC MARLESKUHLMANN-WYANDOTTE 6 March 1972 10357/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Polyoxyalkylene ether polyols containing water-soluble residual catalyst impurities and having a molecular weight of at least 300 and less than 65% of ethylene oxide units, are purified by forming a mixture with water and an inert solvent differing in density from water and in which the polyol is soluble to give a solution which is substantially immiscible in water, centrifugally separating the solvent/ polyol solution from the water (which retains the impurities) and recovering the polyol from the solvent. During the centrifugal separation step the solvent/polyol solution may also be simultaneously washed with counter-current water. Suitable solvents are hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones or ethers. Examples describe the treatment of glycerolpropylene oxide-ethylene oxide adducts of M.W. 2800, 3000, 3300, 3500, 3600 and 3700; polyoxypropylene glycols of M.W. 3000, 2000 and 750; polyoxyethylene adducts of polypropylene bases having M.W.s of 1750, 2000 and 2500; polyoxypropylene adducts of trimethylolpropane of M.W. 425, 4500 and 6000; a hydroxypropylated bisphenol A of M.W. 400; a glycerol-butylene oxide adduct of M.W. 2000; a glycerol-propylene oxide adduct of M.W. 3000; a propylene oxide adduct of pentaerythritol of M.W. 400; a polyoxypropylene adduct of ethylene diamine of M.W. 500 and a trimethylolpropane-propylene oxide-ethylene oxide adduct of M.W. 3900.
