Abstract

Machine can deal with composite blocks or propellants, i.e. those contg. an oxidising and possible a reducing, charge with a combustible binder. These blocks, generally obtd. by moulding in the engine body, need machining on the rear face, after de-moulding. The machine rests on a principal frame which moves on wheels on parallel rails from the rest to the working posn. A principal housing contains the control mechanism for the milling cutter. The cuttings from the operation are collected by a device which surrounds the cutter and are drawn out through a pipe connected to a suction group. The block being machined remains on end and so retains its symmetry even if only lightly compressed. Precision is improved because the cutter can be moved vertically along its own axis. Machining is effected in successive, concentric passes in the same plane with a radial displacement after each pass. The final operation is to machine a conical cavity, in steps, in the rear face of the block.
