Abstract

1,184,201. Wheel set lathes. WILHELM HEGENSCHEIDT K.G. 7 March, 1967, No. 10780/67. Headings B3B and B3T. In a lathe for machining wheel sets, a face-plate 5 is attached to a spindle 4 supported in radial bearings 3 and 7, in a headstock 2 and means in the form of a thrust bearing 6 is provided between the headstock and the face-plate to effect axial support of the face-plate during machining operations. The wheel set is supported between centres & rotated by dogs 12 attached to the face-plate, the centre 11 shown is carried on a sleeve 13 which is movable within the spindle 4 by hydraulic pressure. The face-plate and spindle are rotatably driven from a motor 24 via helical gearing 21, 22 on the periphery of the face-plate. Hydraulic pressure produced within the spindle is effective in preloading the thrust bearing by the reaction forces between the centres. In an alternative embodiment the front radial bearings 3 in the headstock engage with an extension on the faceplate to which the spindle is attached.
