[Also in Division F2] In a leadscrew mechanism for moving a machine tool carriage, e.g. of a lathe or a milling machine, axially spaced inserts 11, 12, 13 in the nut comprise an internally screw-threaded insert 13 with a group of hydrostatic bearings 14 in the thread flanks to carrying the axial thrust, and plain-bored inserts 11, 12 having groups of hydrostatic bearings 18 acting on the radially outermost peripheral portions of the square section thread on the leadscrew to radially locate the nut relative to the leadscrew. The bearings 18 comprise four recesses equispaced along a helix corresponding to the helix of the screw thread. The recesses are supplied with pressure fluid via a tenon 15 on the nut which engages in a slot 16 in the machine frame. The leadscrew shaft is supported in fixed hydrostatic bearings 5, 6.
