Abstract

In a process for purifying exhaust gases (esp. from petrol engines) by conversion of CO, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides into harmless cpds. using a catalyst, the excess O2 content of the mixt. of exhaust gas and air passing through the catalyst bed is adjusted to a value 1.5-2 time the theoretical O2 content. The catalyst pref. comprises at least one 4th-period transition metal oxide and at least one Gp. VIII noble metal. The use of the above O2 excess increases the nitrogen oxide conversion while only slightly decreasing the conversion of CO and hydrocarbons.
