Abstract
The catalyst consists of a substantially rigid, iron (pref. steel) component, in mesh form, with surface at least partially oxidised. After oxidation, the catalyst surface is then activated in a reducing atmosphere contg. carbon monoxide. The catalysts are suitable for attaching to the exhaust system of IC engines, pref. with gases contg. at least 1% CO which catalytically rduces the nitrogen oxides at temps. over 400 degrees C. Both oxidation and reduction-activation of the catalyst may be effected by the exhaust gases under specified conditions. The catalysts are not broken down and expelled from the system by high temps and mechanical stresses.
