Abstract

Combustible gases, esp. those produced by vapour-phase catalytic reaction of a hydrocarbon with steam to give a gas contg. CO, CO2 and H2 followed by methanation of the gas, are enriched by contacting with a liq. hydrocarbon distillate (pref. the same as was used to produce the gas) so that the distillate is stripped of its normally gaseous hydrocarbons. In the prodn of the starting combustible gas, (a) part of the gas contg, CO, CO2 and H2 can be cooled without steam condensation to recover high-value heat and then cooled by direct contact with the liq. hydrocarbon to separate steam and then used to desulphurise the liq. hydrocarbon; and/or (b) the gas contg. CO, CO2 and H2 can be treated to remove steam and reduce the CO2 content to 10 vol.% before methanation.
