Abstract

1329137 Separating gases by diffusion ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 9 Nov 1970 53184/ 70 Heading B1L Components of a gaseous feed are separated by using a semi-permeable membrane, the feed being mixed prior to contact with the membrane with a vapourised liquid, the membrane being capable of sorbing the liquid, and one of the components of the feed to be separated being more soluble in the liquid than another component. The product is enriched in the more soluble component. Preferably the liquid is water and the membrane is of cellulose acetate, polyethylene glycol terephthalate or other hydrophilic material. The feed mixture, which is preferably heated, may comprise natural gas, or a mixture of ammonia, nitrogen and hydrogen, or a mixture of olefins and paraffins, especially ethylene and methane, or a mixture of carbon dioxide with hydrogen or oxygen.
