Abstract
1,259,153. Degassing aqueous solutions. RHONE POULENC S.A. 13 Feb., 1969 [14 Feb., 1968], No. 8002/69. Headings B1M and B1R. A process for effecting the absorption of a gas by, or the removal of a gas from, an aqueous solution comprises bringing the said solution into contact with one side of a waterproof porous membrane as defined below, through which aqueous solution cannot pass having pores with an apparent diameter as defined below of 0.01 to 3Á and having a critical surface tension as defined below less than 40 dynes/cm. at 20C, the other side of the said membrane being in contact with a gas or gas mixture having a total pressure from 0.01 bar gauge to the minimum pressure of the said solution against the membrane, any gas to be absorbed by the said solution having a pressure or partial pressure respectively higher than the partial pressure of the same gas in the said solution at the membrane and any gas to be removed from the said solution having a partial pressure lower than the partial pressure of the same gas in the said solution at the membrane. By "porous membrane" is meant a material through which a gas can pass by simply following the path of the pores in the material and not by diffusion through the material of which the membrane consists as in the case of "permeable" membranes, as described in the Specification. Critical surface tension is determined from the formula has #=1 + b (γ o - γ c ) where # is the contact angle, γ c is the critical surface tension, γ c is the surface free energy of the liquid and b is a constant. The apparent diameter of the pores (2R) is obtained from the formula where P is the minimum pressure of mercury at the membrane surface required to force mercury through the membrane, where y is the surface tension of mercury, and # is the angle of contact of the mercury on the material of the membrane. The process may be applied to the oxygenation of blood with or without simultaneous removal of carbon dioxide.
