Abstract

A method of making pre-deformed plastics film winding material for winding annular objects, such as motor tyres or coiled cables, consists of winding the film around a specially shaped roller so that it adopts the shape of the roller. Pref. the roller has max. and min. dias. and a transverse shape so that when a melted plastics film is wound around it and continuously cooled, the film adopts the required permanent deformation. Typically, the deforing roll bulges out to a wider dia. at the centre and tapers symmetrically towards the ends, its maximum dia. being always less than that of the tyre or coil to be wrapped. The deformed sheet is subsequently wrapped circumferentially around the annulus and automatically fits to it so that the edges of the sheet can be sealed by welding.
