Abstract

Hollow thick-walled elastic cushions for use as pads during press folding of steel sheet. The cushions deform in tension to offer a back pressure to the press tool force. Pref. the internal and external cushion profiles have rounded corners to inhibit tearing. Pref. the cushion void vol. is about 32.5% of the overall cushion vol. Cushions pref. made of polyurethane elastomers. For use in presses folding steel sheet up to 15 mm thick. By working in tension, the cushions do not require an external casing and do not significantly absorb press energy at the expense of the energy transmitted to the sheet being bent.
