Abstract

[Also in Division A5] The supporting surface of an invalid bed comprises transverse strips 1, 2, the strips 2 being moved slowly by mechanical means in such a manner that the weight of the body of a person resting upon the surface is supported in different places in succession. As shown in Fig. 1 the ends of flexible strips 1 are attached to longitudinal members 3 of a fixed frame 4 and the ends of the strips 2 are attached to longitudinal members 6 which are slidable horizontally transversely of their length in slots 9 formed in transverse end members 7. If the members 6 are moved slowly inwardly and outwardly by means of e.g. a fluid pressure operated jack, Fig. 5 (not shown) or by eccentric mechanism the weight of the invalid will be transferred between strips 1 and strips 2 in a steady cycle providing a massaging effect. In a modification shown in Fig. 10 inflexible slats 26 provided with pads 27, 28 are rockably mounted in the side members of the bed by trunnions 29. Rockers 30 on the slats 26 are pivoted at 31 to an operating bar 32 which is slowly reciprocated to raise and lower the pads 27, 28 alternately. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 943,834.
