Abstract
1,221,729. Beds and frames. HOVERMARINE Ltd. 9 July, 1969 [17 July, 1968], No. 34108/68. Heading B3B. [Also in Divisions B7 and F2] A machine tool e.g. a lathe 31 comprises a tool rest 30 movable over a stationary bed 32 on which it is supported by a cushion 33 of pressurized air, and includes means for restricting the escape of cushion air from between the rest 30 and the bed 32 comprising a pair of substantially parallel grooves 37 formed in the bed 32 on each side of the cushion 33 and extending longitudinally of the bed 32 in the direction of movement of the rest 30, a body of liquid 38, e.g. water or mercury, in each of the grooves 37 and a pair of wall members 39 integral with and extending downwardly along the sides of the rest 30 so as to dip into the liquid 38. The ends of the cushion 33 are contained by flexible skirts 40 comprising single flaps of rubberized fabric in contact with the bed 32 and cushion air escape gaps 41 exist between the lower edges of the skirts 40 and the liquid 38, which gaps 41 can be reduced by local downward extension of skirts 40.
