Abstract

Process for treating the surface (I) of a hard metal e.g. W or Ti or Ta carbide workpiece to increase its surface hardness comprising contacting (I) with a B4C and borax mixt at >= fusion temp. pref. 1000 degrees C for long enough, pref. 3 hrs. to produce a hardened layer on (I).
