Abstract
Fenders comprising a rubber pad or block supporting a layer of material with a relatively low coeff. of friction. Pref. the rubber block incorporates reinforcement layers of cables or textiles or metals and is shaped or mounted on a backplate suitable for anchorage onto a vertical wall or post. Pref. the low friction layer comprises a high mol. wt. polyethylene or polypropylene material, pref. incorporating a phosphorescent additive. For mfg. fenders or buffers for protecting quaysides or wharves or river banks from ship or boat hulls and vice versa. The boat hull can slip relatively easily along the polyolefin surface with less drag or shear on the fender or its mountings. The rubber acts as a shock absorber for the structure behind the fender and damps the reaction against the hull.
