Abstract

H2 and O2 esp. resulting from the radiolytic splitting of water in nuclear reactors, are combined by passing the mixt. through a catalytic bed, usually Pt on alumina. The bed is so constructed that the thickness is 0.25 ft (76 mm) and the thickness/area ratio is 0.01 ft/ft2 (0.033m/m2) thus ensuring an efficient conversion. The catalyst is contained in modular cartridge units which are inserted into the reaction vessel and have two concentric tubes with gas permeable walls. The annular space between the tubes is filled with catalyst. Multi-compartment cartridges, in which any dislodged catalyst is replaced by gravity or inverted U-channel between compartments, are esp. efficient.
