Abstract

1441031 Water MEAD CORP 22 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 29819/73 Heading C1A An elementary oxygen-containing gas and hydrogen gas are reacted in the presence of an aqueous liquid phase by introducing the gaseous reactants into a reaction zone and into contact therein with the liquid phase, in which zone there is positioned a catalyst consisting of a fixed bed of particles of a solid electrically conductive catalytic material for catalysing the reaction, which particles are substantially free from chemical reaction with the gaseous reactants, the aqueous liquid phase and the reaction products, the electrically conductive particles having areas in contact with a hydrophobic material without the particles being completely encapsulated thereby so that said areas are more readily contacted by the gaseous reactants and other adjoining areas are more readily contacted by the aqueous liquid phase so as to ensure that the said areas of said catalyst surface are respectively directly in contact with each other, and removing the products of reaction. The catalyst may be prepared as disclosed in Specification 1,392,720 and may comprise carbon, possibly with inclusion, activated carbon or a plasticized titanium sponge wetproofed with P.T.F.E. Thus hydrogen and oxygen in effluent gases from atomic reactors and electrolysis apparatus can be recombined.
