Abstract

[Also in Division C5] In a partial combustion process for making a gas containing H 2 and CO from hydrocarbons e.g. natural gas and LPG, the process is performed in a channel 12 which is enclosed by walls 10, 11 having catalytically active surfaces and which is narrow enough to ensure a temperature gradient normal to the axis of the channel of nil. The channel, which may be straight or bent, e.g. zig-zag or coiled, is not more than 1.6 cms wide, e.g. 0.1 to 0.5 cm, and the residence time in the channel is in the range 0.01 to 0.5 second, preferably 0.02 to 0.1 second. The walls may be lined with or made of the catalyst, examples being pure Ni and Ni alloy, and the walls should be subjected to an oxidative treatment e.g. with air at 1000‹C followed by reduction and further oxidation, to reduce CH 4 , H 2 O and CO 2 contents in the gas produced. Preferred temperatures for the process are in the range 900‹ to 1000‹C. The channel 12 may be formed in a conical or cylindrical vessel 10, which may be externally heated, e.g. electrically at 16, or cooled, and two or more channels, e.g. in parallel array, may be used. The process inhibits the formation of naphthalene-type compounds. The O 2 -containing gas supplied to the reaction may be air or O 2 -enriched air, and may contain CO 2 and/or water.
