Abstract

The balloons are assembled from longitudinal panels of thermoplastic film where the joints are reinforced by welded thermoplastic strips and where division of the balloon into minor and major envelopes is determined by the position and throat size of an external semi-elastic collar near the top of the balloon. Esp. for mfr. of 'natural' stratospheric survey balloons for brief single rise or controlled altitude sustained flight ascents. Reduced weight and enhanced tear resistance are achieved compared with two stage balloons fabricated on separate envelopes joined by a conventional (metal) collar and with panels joined by stitching or adhesive tapes.
