Abstract

The monomer is introduced into the treatment chamber and substrates (e.g. metallised plastic tape) to be coated and drawn across the faces of two electrodes. An alternating voltage applied between the electrodes produces an electric field which polymerises the monomer to form a thin non-porous polymer film on the substrate as described in the parent patent. A fluorocarbon having double carbon bonds (pref. HFP) is introduced into the treatment chamber pref. at ambient temp. and in gaseous form to speed up the coating process. The method is used for coating magnetic tapes or waterproofing integrated circuits.
