Abstract

Treatment of exhaust gases, esp. to decrease the content of oxides of nitrogen, CO and unburnt hydrocarbons, by controlling the admission of fuel to the engine so that the mixture of combustion-supporting gas contg. oxygen, and fuel is sufficiently rich in fuel for the exhaust gases to contain more CO than oxides of nitrogen by vol. and only a little oxygen, and by bringing about the catalytic reduction of the oxides of nitrogen by CO in a first reactor zone and then completing the purification of the exhaust gases in a second reactor zone by oxidising the hydrocarbons and residual CO with post-combustion air.
