Abstract

Photocatalytic oxidn. of gaseous or vaporised hydrocarbons (e.g. isobutane to acetone) takes place at below 100 degrees C. using a metal oxide catalyst contng. radiation-mobile oxygen (e.g. TiO2), with UV radiation energy at least equal to the oxides forbidden band, but not too high for the energised oxide to participate in oxidn. (e.g. 200-3400 angstroms). Reaction is pref. in the presence of water vapour.
