Compsn. comprises the liquid polymeric produce of a heated blend of 25-80 wt % of a reducing sugar, 4-20 wt.% water, 0-15 wt.% of a polyhydric phenol selected from resorcinol, pyrogallol and phloroglucinol, and 8-62 wt.% of 85% strength phosphoric acid. Cold-setting and heatsetting, flameproof and fireproof, resinous binder may be prepared from the compsns. by reacting with furfuryl alcohol or furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde resin.
