Abstract

Welding of nickel steels which are tough at low temps is effected with a flux material which is entirely austenitic and contains 0.01-0.25% C, 0.1-0.8% Si, 2.5-15.0% Mn, 12.0-28.0% Cr, 10.0-20.0% Ni, 0.1-4.0% Mo, and 0.1-0.25% N2, together with at most 3% Al, B, Co, Cu, No, Ta, Ti, V and/or W, the balance being Fe and impurities, and a welding powder contg. 1-30% oxides of Al, Zr, Ti, Cr or Mn, 8-40% CaF2, 30-80% alkaline earth oxides, and 1-12% SiO2, the quantity of alkaline earth oxides being twice that of the TiO2 + SiO2. High quality welds are obtained with a high toughness at low temp. e.g.-196 degrees C.
