Abstract
Process combines (1) the prodn. of soft water by the direct osmosis of the sea-water in an osmotic exchanger, with a view to causing the dilution of a conc. aq. soln. of ammonium carbonate, the components of this soln. are then sepd. by heating it to a temp. sufficient to decompose the ammonium carbonate and (2) the prodn. of soft water by a conventional distn. system. The gaseous phase resulting from heating the dil. ammonium carbonate soln. is introduced into a heat exchanger which constitutes the first stage of a distillation unit. The overall performance of the two associated operations is greatly superior to that of a conventional distn. unit operating at 100-120 degrees C. To attain the same yield by simple distn. a higher operating temp. of 150 degrees C would be needed, with the consequent risks of scaling.
