Abstract
Composite insulation material comprises a layer of insulation having a low coefficient of linear expansion, pref. about 4 x 10-5/degree K between 20 degrees and 300 degrees K, against the cold wall and an elastic insulant pref. under sufficient compression against the hot wall to accommodate any relative thermal expansion across the structure. Pref. the component interfaces at joints are stepped and/or sealed with adhesives or (rubber) seals. Pref. PVC foam of 30 - 50 kg/m3 density is used for the low expansion layer and expanded polystyrene of 9 - 15 kg/m3 forthe elastic component. Pref. any outlet is lined with PVC foam of 50 - 60 kg/m3 density. Material is used for insulation of cryogenic vessels, freezing tunnels, refrigerated stores, etc.
