Abstract

1414791 Joint-making packing; pipe couplings SVENSKA FLAKTFABRIKEN AB 19 May 1972 [7 June 1971] 23662/72 Headings F2B and F2G A seal for use in pipe couplings comprises a foamed plastics strip 2, Fig. 1, impregnated with asphalt and having a surface layer 3 formed or provided over at least part of the surface of the strip and having an air permeability less than that of the strip. The strip may be laid into a groove 1a, compressed and fixed in this state by a tape 4, Fig. 2, until immediately before a jointing operation, at which the tape is removed, Fig. 3, and the strip allowed to expand, the surface layer 3 limiting the air permeability of the foamed plastics material. The surface layer 3 may be applied as a separate layer (e.g. a plastics foil) or may be formed by heat-treating the surface. As shown, the strips 2 are laid in grooves around a pipe coupling sleeve 1 and held in compression by the tapes 4 immediately before insertion into the ends of the pipes to be coupled. The surface layer may be perforated in certain zones only and the rate of expansion may be controlled so that some zones expand faster than others.
