Abstract
Collar for supporting a refrigerant insulation pipe passing through an insulated partition between compartments at different temperatures has a laminated structure involving an impermeable film or foil laminated between a thin layer of foam (on the warmer side) and a thick layer of foam (on the colder side). The thick layer, at least, is directly bonded to the pipe walls. Used esp. for insulating a refrigerant circuit pipe passing between the freezing and the storage compartments of a refrigerator, to plug a gap cut in the solid skin of the storage compartment to allow the pipe to pass through. The impermeable layer limits penetration of the collar by water vapour, to prevent rupture of the foam cell walls by internal condensation and freezing. Pref. the cellular layers of the collar are made of expanded (closed cell) polyethylene and the impermeable interlayer of aluminium foil. The 'thin' layer, on the hotter face of the collar, is =3 mm thick. The foam may be a rigid material or a stiff but elastic material. The pipe is pref. coated with a primer to promote bonding cellular layer(s) of the collar.
