Abstract
An improved vertical axis, rotary furnace of the type having an annular treatment chamber with integral treatment bed and outer circumferential slot for discharge of treated material and inlet of hot gas; essentially, the hot gas is supplied from an annular chamber surrounding the slot and seals are provided between the moving edges of the slot and the annular chamber which is stationary. In calcining the minerals, such as limestone and dolomite, it now becomes possible to improve substantially the air-cooling arrangements for the lower edge of the treatment chamber outer wall and the outer edge of the bed, where highest temperatures are encountered.
