Abstract

Prepn. is by (a) forming a soln. contg. aluminium fluoride and ammonium fluoride, (b) heating this soln. at 40-95 degrees C to form crystals to ammonium tetrafluoroaluminate, (c) separating into an impoverished mother liquor and a slurry contg. the crystals, (d) separating the crystals from the slurry, and (e) thermally dissociating the crystals into anhydrous aluminium fluoride and gaseous ammonium fluoride. Anhydrous aluminium fluoride is obtained in a pure state, as the formation of alumina is avoided. The process is carried out at relatively low temps. with a low energy consumption.
