Abstract
Vertical shaft furnace for the continuous firing of dolomite, magnesia, calcium carbonate or fire clay using an oil-air mixture. Mixture consists of vapourised fuel oil and hot air having a temperature of 300-650 degrees C, air being present only in sufficient quantity to permit 40% combustion of the oil. The mixture is prepared by heating up the oil under pressure at 300-350 degrees C, allowing it to vapourise by reducing the pressure and reheating it prior to stepwise mixing with hot air. The mixture is introduced in to the furnace through tuyeres so constructed as to induce turbulence to the vapour air mixture. Feeding into the furnace takes place through recessed slits in the wall the recesses being continued throughout the length of the shaft as grooves in the wall. Even firing of the charge is promoted by the introduction of an open tube into the centre part of the top feeding end of the furnace and the charge being fed in two sizes by means of a specially designed hopper, fines into the ring shape spaced between the tube and furnace walls, coarse into the pipe. At the bottom discharge end there is fitted a hearth with a conical protuberance in the centre which opt. may be votatable.
