Abstract

Sugar is extracted in a plant consisting of a series of cells each comprising an endless belt conveyor and a cane mill. The belts are permeable, inclined and serve to bring the pressed cane leaving one mill to the inlet of the next. The sugar cane, after being pressed in the first mill, is soaked on the conveyor from the first cell with juice expressed by the mill in the following cell. The soaking and pressing operations are effected as many times as is necessary to obtain the desired extraction. The extraction rate of the cells is increased so that their number can be reduced; the sugar content of the juice sent to the preceding cell is also increased.
