Aqs. soln. of Ni- and/or Co-sulphate is atomised and dried to obtain the corresponding sulphate monohydrate (approx), which is then calcined at 900-1400 degrees C in an atmosphere containing excess oxygen, Flash calcination in a stream of air may also be applied. The gases from the calcination stage are used for the atomising drying of the solution at 150-180 degrees C The preliminary dehydration facilitates the subsequent calcination in a furnace, and reduces the water content of the resulting gases, from which SO2 and SO3 may be utilized in the production of H2SO4.
