Abstract
Ammonium nitrate is removed from the condensed vapours by means of anionic and cationic selective electrodialysis membranes. In the electrodialysis process the 'concentrated' circuit comprises an acid soln. contng. 65-80% ammonium nitrate, the dilute circuit is the condensed vapour and the operating temp. is 40-60 degrees C. The acid soln. may be obtained in the neutralisation plant by neutralising nitric acid (47-48%, 50-53% or 56%) with gaseous NH3. Ammonium nitrate is recovered from the 'concentrated' circuit by passing to the first stage of an evaporator after pre-heating. Vapours contng. 1,500-20,000 mg./l ammonium nitrate may be purified to a content of 300-500 mg./l.
