Abstract

Highly conc. HNO3 prodn. from NH3 is effected by (a) oxidn. of NH3 at 0.8-1.2 bar with post reaction heat recovery by condensing the reaction water before significant transformation of NO to NO2 has occurred, sufficient water being collected to provide the stoichiometric amt. for stage (c), (b) compression of the nitrous gases at 7-12 bars to recover NO2 by washing successively with conc HNO3 and H2O, (c) synthesis of HNO3 from the recovered NO2 and 1.5-4.5 times stoichiometric O2 requirement (as air) at 12-25 bar and 40-65 degrees C for 1-3 hrs, and (d) partial denitration of the conc. acid (98.8-99.8 wt. %) to provide washing acid for (b) and complete denitration to yield the dil. acid.
