Abstract

Prophylactic dental paste compositions comprising zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4) and tin dioxide (SnO2). The new compositions are efficient for cleaning and polishing teeth while reducing hard tooth structure loss due to abrasion. A composition is prepared containing ZrSiO4 (50-99%, pref. 75-92.5% by wt.) and the balance of SnO2. A 9:1 wt. ratio of ZrSiO4 to SnO2 is preferred. The ZrSiO4 particles are distributed throughout three levels, namely 10-50% of particles up to about 20 microns (pref. 10-20 microns), 5-25% of particles of 50-75 microns and the residue of particles of 20-50 microns in size.
