Abstract

A ceramic material with a very small coefficient of thermal expansion is characterized by a composition consisting of Al2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 in the molar ratio 1:0.05-1.5:0.5-1.5 respectively. In one modification up to 25% of the molar amount of SiO2 may be replaced by B2O3 and/or up to 45% by P2O5. In other modifications up to 12% by weight of alkaline earth metal oxides, zinc oxide and/or lithium oxide are added as fluxing agents based on the total weight of the basic composition, and/or up to 48% by weight of refractory oxides such as thorium, zirconium or rare earth (cerium or yttrium) oxides, and refractory carbides, nitrides, borides or sulphides. In examples the SiO2 and a corresponding proportion of the Al2O3 component are introduced as kaolinite, and the remaining Al2O3 and the TiO2 as the oxides per se.
